This new catagory that was created after all the Y!A soap opera going on about it... isn't really going to meet the needs like it potentially could.
Theres no point in polling if you get 10 answers that are all the same or similar - in a true poll there are different choices and then if 10 people feel the same way - they all vote on that same answer and it is all tallied up to get the results of the poll.
If Y!A really want's to give us a polling section that is of worth they will include a different sort of format for it. Every catagory *should* include the ability to create a poll - POLLS should not be in the format of all the traditional Q's and A's that are already here, - They should be in a format that lets the "asker" have the ability to *create the answers to choose from* - and then putting them to a vote for the community to take the *poll*
Now This would be of value - NOT just creating a "Polls %26amp; Surveys" catagory - which is more of a pacifier to shut us up...

I think what they are calling "polling" questions are any questions such as "what is your favorite..." etc. but to me that is more of an opinion than a poll. For a true poll, I like your idea and for the more opinionated type of question I think there should be a section in each catagory set aside for that rather than lumping them all together, as you also mentioned.
I don't know, I'm getting more and more confused over the issue by the minute :/
Hope this made sense. It's almost 1am here %26amp; I'm half asleep. It kinda made sense in my head if nothing else!

I wonder if they are trying to collect our opinions about polling. I still don't really understand their definition of it and maybe they don't really have a clear definition.
Remember this is a beta...There are going to be bugs that need to worked out. I have no problem with that. I'm am sure they are trying to create a product that will keep the highest percentage of the users coming back again and again. What I can't tolerate is all the petty suspensions. If the user is using obscene words or promoting illegal activities, yes dump him now. But have some heart We the users are a BETA too...
You are saying "we" can make mistakes but not you folks. I suggest banning all suspensions during the beta edition except in the worse case scenarios mentioned above.
The users love this site. So why not work it out together and make a solid widely accepted product.
We hear you loud and clear. I'll pass this on to the rest of the team to get their feedback on it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have to think that Y!A added this category due to the number of poll "type" questions appearing in all of the other categories. And, they were fielding a lot of 'reports of abuse' due to these polling/survey type questions. In that regard, I think that having this category fixes those two issues quite readily.
As to having "real" polls, that's a slippery slope. To have real, meaningful, useful polls requires well-formed questions, asked in a particular order, without ambiguity. They require a certain population size and sample in order to extrapolate meaningful data and possible conclusions. Knowledge of the sample size, demographics, etc is required in order to properly frame the results once they are tallied. I just don't think that it will be feasible for Y!A to provide a "real" polling/survey category.
So, I do think they've solved the polling dilemma, if the dilemma is defined as 1) too many polling type questions appearing on the site; and, 2) too much Y!A time spent responding to polling type questions appearing on the site.
If this post is meant to be a poll, and the answer choices are:
Yes, No, No Opinion, Don't Care
Then, my answer is 'yes.'
Personally, I see the main problem with the polling category to be that it is just another category of the site. There is still a best answer chosen that gets 10 points, although that makes absolutely no sense for a polling question. I hope this category is removed until they have a legitimate polling section set up.
I like that thinking
Well personally I Think that the pointsreaper copied 15000 polling violations exactly like the ones he was given violations for and sent them to Amy. And that Yahoo knows that if they suspend everyone (like they should) they are out of the Q%26amp;A business. Like it or not the pointsreaper is changing the face of this site. For the better I might add!!! Yes sir 95% of you have violated the polling rule. I've yet to locate that mythical polling rule. But we have Matt and Amy's word that it exists somewhere. I'm sure that they will find it and post it soon. It sure isn't in the guidelines.
